HERITAGE POINTE, Minn. – After four years of dedication and growth under Coach Laurie Ourada’s leadership, the Heritage Pointe Dragonflies soared to victory at this year’s TRYathlon– cementing their bond not just as teammates but as a family. Despite their small size, the Dragonflies embody perseverance, camaraderie, and community spirit. More than athletes, they are teammates, friends, and supporters.

During a recent team meeting, the Dragonflies teammates sat together initially reserved but soon laughing, teasing, and playfully goofing off. Their camaraderie is warm and welcoming, but when it comes to the Dragonflies’s name, they take competition seriously.

“Being part of this team keeps us busy,” one member shared. “The happiness we feel here is familiar–it feels like home.”

The team meets and practices five days a week, ensuring that members stay active and engaged. While the training sessions are designed to build skill and stamina, they also serve as a space for social connection. Many of the residents were shy when they first joined the community, but through the Dragonflies, they found renewed confidence, showing their true personalities just as they did with their families. For some, it has been a transformative experience, allowing them to break out of their shells and rediscover the joy of competition and companionship.

It is a mission for the Dragonflies to encourage others to join, welcoming newcomers with open arms, support, and friendship. It’s not just about winning games, but about creating a space where everyone feels valued. Even those unable to physically participate still find a place within the team. Dorris, one of the residents and teammates, despite recently suffering from pneumonia, now acts as the team’s cheerleader, shouting enthusiastic encouragements from the sidelines.

“GO FASTER!”

“It doesn’t matter if you’re playing or cheering–we all contribute in our own way,” Laurie said.

“Everyone is a part of the team.”

Recently, the team suffered a heartbreaking loss, as one of their most beloved members–the “heart” of their team – passed away. Their presence however, remains deeply felt.

“We can still hear her up there yelling at us that we are too slow,” one of the residents said softly, a reminder that the team’s spirit carries on in her memory.

Her loss served as an essential reminder of why the Dragonflies continue to push forward, not just for themselves, but for those who have left a lasting impact on their journey. It was her infectious energy and constant encouragement that were fondly remembered by residents. Deeply inspiring them to push forward through even the toughest obstacles.

“Participating is amazing. It’s a lot of fun,” Dorris said. “If they can do it, I can do it.”

Coach Laurie firmly believes in inclusivity stating, “Everyone has a place on the team, no matter their ability.”

With humor and positivity filling every practice and meeting, it’s clear that the Dragonflies are more than just a recreational team–they are a support system. Many residents, once quiet and reserved, now boldly express themselves. One of the keys to their success has been their ability to maintain a sense of humor. “It’s the wine talking,” they all laugh heartily.

Every game, whether won or lost, is celebrated. Their success isn’t measured by scoreboards but by the moments of joy and companionship that came with playing together. The team is always striving and searching for new members, knowing just how life-changing being part of it can be.

They use engagement, positive affirmation, and encouragement to invite more residents to join. Whether it’s through friendly conversation, listening to someone’s concerns, or simply making them feel welcomed. The team prides itself on creating a warm, welcoming atmosphere–one that fosters support, inclusivity, and a true sense of belonging.

With every team record, triumph, and shared moment, the Dragonflies serve as a beacon of encouragement, proving that no matter one’s age or ability, there is always room for growth, laughter, and camaraderie. It is not just a team but a family–one that lifts and inspires no matter what the future holds. Looking ahead to new challenges and victories, one thing is certain: the Dragonflies will continue to soar.
