Lifespark has officially launched Robot Soccer as part of its Spark Performance League, an innovative senior sports league featuring head-to-head competition among Lifespark Senior Living communities.
Robot Soccer combines teamwork, strategy, and communication through radio-controlled soccer players, giving residents an opportunity to compete while exercising hand-eye coordination, cognitive skills, and social connection. Designed with accessibility in mind, the sport allows participants of varying physical abilities to contribute meaningfully to their team’s success.
For All Saints Senior Living Resident Don Valiant, captain of the All Saints Coyotes team, the most meaningful aspect of Robot Soccer is the opportunity to compete alongside his wife, Betty.
“My favorite part of Robot Soccer is that my wife gets to participate,” said Don. “She had a stroke several years ago and is paralyzed on her left side, but she is still able to compete.”
To support broader participation, Lifespark developed two controller variations in-house to accommodate residents with different mobility and dexterity needs. Because success in Robot Soccer depends on communication, planning, and problem-solving rather than speed, strength, or endurance, more residents can take part regardless of physical limitations.
The sport has also sparked community engagement. Residents, staff, family members, and children have joined the experience as athletes, coaches, cheerleaders, and supporters, creating opportunities for intergenerational connection and teamwork.
The 2026 Robot Soccer Finals will take place on June 16, with the top two teams advancing to the Robot Soccer World Championship on June 18.
Robot Soccer is part of Lifespark’s SPARK Growth & Wellness program, developed by Dr. Bill Thomas, Lifespark’s Chief Independence Officer. The program, which is a key component of Lifespark’s COMPLETE Senior Living model available only in Lifespark communities, encourages residents to pursue growth, purpose, connection, and wellness through team-based activities and challenges.
By shifting the focus from individual health outcomes to community engagement and shared experiences, SPARK helps residents build meaningful relationships while supporting physical, cognitive, and emotional well-being.
