High utilization of the hospital system continues to have a rippling effect on the work we and others in health care face. Visiting the ER shouldn’t be the default alternative when issues arise in between visits, and yet for many seniors it is.

The biggest area of over usage can be found in the emergency room (ER) where more than 50-55% of visits are unnecessary. As we’ve shared, here in Minnesota, new data shows that one in six days of inpatient care in the hospital has been deemed unnecessary – that means 65,000 people who went to the hospital didn’t have to.
